CALL FOR PAPERS - History: a Multidisciplinary Science?
6th LSE International History PhD Conference & Workshop
Friday 30th September - Saturday 1st October 2011 London, UK

Conference Overview
The organisers of the 6th annual LSE International History PhD Workshop are pleased to announce the call for papers for a weekend combining conference presentations with academic training. The conference aims to challenge new and established historians to think in terms of their impact on other disciplines, and of the impact of other disciplines on their own craft.

Guidelines for Papers and Proposals
We welcome papers from historians and non-historians alike. However, we hope to highlight research that contributes to a conversation between History and other fields of study. The following, non-exhaustive list of questions may help you as you prepare your proposal:
- How do we, as historians, enrich our understanding of the past with other disciplines?
- Is history the ultimate laboratory for theories produced in other departments and do these other departments therefore need to incorporate the historian's craft into their own work?
- But also, what is inherently "History" and so distinct from all these other branches of knowledge?

This is an excellent opportunity for students to present their research in a comfortable environment and to think critically about their research in a multidisciplinary context.

Presenters will be asked to deliver a 15-minute talk on a paper of around 3,000 words in length. The talk will be followed by a 20-minute panel discussion in which participants will ask questions about your paper and address particular themes that have emerged.

We particularly encourage first and second year students to take advantage of this opportunity to present in an informal and relaxed forum. Even if you have little or no experience in giving papers, the workshop style provides you with the chance to practice your presentation skills in a low-pressure environment.

Proposals should be maximum 400 words and include a working title along with an abstract of the paper you would like to present. Please keep in mind the following key dates: Proposal Deadline: 1st September 2011 Notification of Participants: 8th September 2011 Paper Deadline: 20th September 2011
